Opening and Closing in a Goodway: Creating Community in the Classroom Online

Within Haudenosaunee traditions, we are taught to bring our minds together as one for the work we are to do ahead. In applying this concept to education, we can bring our minds together as one for the work we do in class, in a meeting or in a workshop. This workshop will share knowledge on traditional Haudenosaunee governance practices and how these practices can be applied in a culturally appropriate way. Opening and Closing in a Goodway can be applied to many scenarios where people gather and it is meant to build community and guide collective work.

At this end of this workshop, participants will:

  • understand traditional Haudenosaunee governance practice and how they can respectfully be applied to classrooms/meetings/workshops.
  • establish how you as an individual can help create a community space through your personalized opening and closing in a goodway.
  • understand how decolonization, Indigenization and reconciliation can add value to their work and/or current teaching practice.
