SUMMARY:The Supportive TA: Building Trust Through Individual Student Interactions
DESCRIPTION:Whether in office hours\, lab discussions\, online chats\, or
informal hallway conversations\, TAs often serve as the first point of
contact for students seeking clarity\, feedback\, and support. This
workshop focuses on developing interpersonal communication skills that can
help teaching assistants build trust and rapport with their students in
one-on-one settings. Participants will explore practical strategies for
listening actively\, responding empathetically\, and maintaining
appropriate professional boundaries during these interactions. TAs will
leave with tools to make every conversation a moment that strengthens
student learning and trust. \n\nLearning Outcomes \nBy the end of this
workshop\, participants should be able to: \n\n\n	Identify strategies for
maintaining professional boundaries while fostering trust and inclusivity
in individual conversations. \n	Use effective communication strategies when
engaging in supportive and professional one-on-one interactions with
students. \n	Apply active listening and empathetic questioning techniques
to respond appropriately to student needs and concerns. \n\n\n \n\nNote: If
you have a @guelphhumber.ca email address and are unable to register\,
please contact the Office of Teaching and Learning (otl@uoguelph.ca) with
the name of the program you’d like to register for\, and we will complete
 the registration on your behalf.
